Weekly Update 1/23/15

Dear Friend:

On Tuesday, Senate Republicans unveiled a proposal that would blow a $40 million hole into the state’s budget. They failed to name which critical services will be cut to cover the cost. But one thing is clear, we know who will benefit…big multinational corporations – who will get this GOP Tax Giveaway.

Mid-week, the State of New Hampshire was once again in the Nation’s spotlight. Politico named NH #1 on their list of the best states for the second year in a row, confirming what Granite Staters already know; we live in the greatest state in America.

We also learned that NH’s unemployment rate dropped to 4% in December, which is significantly lower than the national average and the lowest in New England. This is another indicator that our economy continues to strengthen.

Although, these encouraging signs show our economy is moving in the right direction, we still have more work to do. However, we must stay forced on expanding opportunity for all, not giving more tax giveaways to big businesses.

Thank you for all you do,

Jeff Woodburn
Senate Democratic Leader

Concord Monitor: Senator Feltes – Hassan says GOP Tax Business Giveaway Plan would create hole in the budget
A common concern raised by the bill’s opponents in the discussion was what type of financial impact the tax changes would have on state revenues and services. Sen. Dan Feltes, a Concord Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, questioned how New Hampshire would make up the forecasted revenue losses.

Nashua Telegraph: Senator Lasky – Greater Nashua observes MLK Jr. Day at Annual Breakfast

Sen. Bette Lasky, D-Nashua, a breakfast attendee for years, called the holiday “always such an inspirational, invigorating day.” She went on to say that she and many other legislators, backed by Gov. Maggie Hassan, continue to “fight off right-wing efforts against our freedom and our rights” in Concord.

NHPR: Senator Fuller Clark – County Attorneys Should Be Appointed, Not Elected
County attorneys in New Hampshire have traditionally been elected, but a proposal going before state lawmakers seeks to change that.

Nashua Telegraph: Senator Watters – Proposed legislation would support career-ready programs in state high schools
“For a 21st century economy, we need Career and Technical Education programs…There’s such a demand for work-ready students. Advanced manufacturing, automotive welding, IT in particular; just a variety of employees businesses are crying out for,” Watters said.

Weekly Update 1/16/15

Dear Friend:

As the Session begins, Senate Democrats have been finalizing our legislative efforts to fight for the people of New Hampshire. Our goal is to defend against the repeal of last year’s key victories – passing medicaid expansion, rebuilding NH’s infrastructure, and reinvesting in our shared priorities after the destructive 2011-12 O’Brien budget.

Senate Democrats and Governor Hassan will fight to ensure the Republican Legislature doesn’t take NH backward. We will also continue to focus on finding new innovative ways to expand opportunity for all Granite Staters.

Thank you for all you do,

Jeff Woodburn
Senate Democratic Leader
