State House Roundup Sue Ford

View this email in your browser

Dear Friend,

TOMORROW, President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar are coming to New Hampshire to discuss the opioid epidemic.

Since taking office, Trump and Governor Sununu have both failed to deliver on their promises to combat the crisis. This visit highlights just how little they’ve done to give New Hampshire the resources it needs. Trump and Sununu need to learn that you can’t fix the opioid crisis with photo-ops.

Join us tomorrow, at Veterans Memorial Park in Manchester at 1 pm to tell Trump and Sununu: NO MORE BROKEN PROMISES!

Share and RSVP to the event by clicking HERE.

Please continue to use this regular newsletter as a tool for your local committee meetings or as a supplement to your own regular newsletter.

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have.
Best,

Action Alert

Stand up to Vice President Pence and Governor Sununu!
This Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence is coming to New Hampshire to hold an event on the Tax Reform bill and to attend a fundraiser for Governor Sununu.

Join Granite State Progress and the New Hampshire Young Democrats to protest Pence’s visit and show them that Granite Staters will not accept their radical NRA-endorsed agenda that keep guns in the hands of dangerous individuals!

The protest will take place on Thursday, March 22nd from 5 pm – 7 pm outside the Radisson Hotel in Manchester. RSVP HERE.

On the Floor

Paid Family and Medical Leave

Wednesday, March 21st / House of Representatives / Full Vote

HOUSE – HB 628-FN, relative to establishing paid family and medical leave program

Why this matters: Last week, House Republicans added an amendment to HB 628 which destroyed the intentions and practicality of the original paid family and medical leave program. The House will be voting on this bill on Wednesday, where they will hopefully overturn this amendment and adopt the Democrat’s proposed amendment, which restores the integrity of the original plan.

Abortion Viability Ban

Wednesday, March 21st / House of Representatives / Full Vote

HOUSE – HB 1680-FN, relative to prohibiting abortions after viability

Why this matters: This bill would prohibit abortions after “viability,” an unscientific and baseless term that would effectively limit women’s access to abortions. This restriction is not only unconstitutional but dangerous. The vast majority of abortions take place before a woman is 20 weeks pregnant. When women have abortions after this period, it is because their lives or the lives of the fetus are in danger.

Voter Suppression

Wednesday, March 21st / House of Representatives / Floor Vote

HOUSE – HB 1543, relative to domicile of students for voting purposes

Why this matters: HB 1543 is the most egregious of the many Republican-proposed voter suppression bills. This legislation seeks to ban domiciled college students from voting in New Hampshire outright. This is an absurd assault on the sanctity of students’ voting rights and must be opposed.

Guns in Schools

Wednesday, March 21st / Senate / Floor Vote

SENATE – SB 357, relative to safe school zones

Why this matters: Despite a party-line vote to keep Senator Martha Hennessey’s amendment from SB 357, she will have a second change to add on her amendment, which would give schools the ability to ban schools on their campus, preceding the floor vote on this legislation. In the wake of the devastating Parkland shooting, this amendment is incredibly important to preventing mass shootings on school campuses.

Be sure to call your State Representative and Governor Sununu’s office (603-271-2121) directly, to register your opinions on these important issues. If you’d like to attend one of these hearings or find out when the next session will take place, email Sue Ford (sueford06@gmail.com)

Priority Hearings

Medicaid Expansion

Tuesday, March 20th, 10:00AM / Health, Human Services, and Elderly Affairs/ Representatives Hall, State House

HOUSE – Health Human Services and Elderly Affairs- SB 313-FN, reauthorizing New Hampshire’s Medicaid Expansion program

Why this matters: On Tuesday, the House HHS Committee will begin hearings on the recently passed Senate Medicaid Expansion reauthorization proposal. In 2016, the reauthorization passed by only one vote in the House of Representatives. This program benefits over 50,000 Granite Staters and has proven to be one of our best tools fighting the opioid crisis.

Legislative Review

Last week, the State House of Representatives accepted an amendment  to New Hampshire’s 10-year transportation improvement program that reinstalled a commuter rail study in the program. While Governor Sununu takes every possible position on commuter rail in an attempt to both parrot Republican-sanctioned talking points and to please corporations, the New Hampshire State House stood firm in their decision to do what’s right for Granite Staters. The bill now heads to the Senate.

Also last week, on the same day as students in New Hampshire and across the country walked out of their classes to protest the lack of legislative action on guns, the New Hampshire Senate Education Committee voted on party lines to reject Democratic Senator Martha Hennessey’s amendment to SB 357 that would give schools the right to ban guns on their campuses. She will have another chance to introduce the amendment this week, but it is clear the only way to strengthen New Hampshire’s gun laws is to kick Sununu and Republican representatives out of office and replace them with legislators who take gun violence seriously.
